Cooler Master's Connector 'Solution' Criticized for Potential Hazards
In a detailed analysis, Igor Wallossek of Igor's Lab highlighted a concerning interaction between a Cooler Master MWE Gold V2 ATX 3.1 power supply's 12V-2x6 connector and an Asus RTX 5070 Ti OC graphics card. The user initially encountered a problem where the angled power connector supplied with the Cooler Master unit interfered with the GPU's cooler, preventing a proper connection. Cooler Master's proposed solution involved using a small tool, such as a pick or flat screwdriver, to release the clips on both sides of the connector's cap, thereby adjusting its angle.
Wallossek's rigorous testing, however, demonstrated that this manual manipulation of the connector leads to detrimental outcomes. Rather than providing a stable solution, modifying the cable's angle caused a redistribution of tension among the individual wires, leading to measurable increases in contact resistance. This heightened resistance, coupled with the potential for movement at the contact points, significantly raises the likelihood of hotspots and, ultimately, cable failure. Wallossek noted that in an uncontrolled environment, such conditions would almost certainly result in the cable melting.
The root of the problem, as identified by Igor, is not the cable's angle per se, but a guiding clip on the connector that, even after detaching the right-angle component, obstructs full insertion into certain high-end GPUs. This design flaw prevents the cable from seating completely, a critical factor for these high-power connectors. The industry has already begun implementing measures like yellow connector pins to visually indicate improper seating, underscoring the importance of a secure connection. The Cooler Master cable's design, according to Wallossek, suggests a severe lack of practical quality control and mechanical testing with actual high-end hardware like the RTX 5090 Suprim or 4090 Strix, where the mechanical fit would clearly be an issue due to the connector's height, bulky cap, and steep cable exit angle.
