Intel's GPU Naming Convention Creates Confusion for Arc Graphics Future

The most recent clarification, provided by Intel's graphics representative Tom Petersen, confirms that the Xe3 integrated GPU within the forthcoming Panther Lake processor is indeed an enhanced version of Xe2, not the previously anticipated Celestial architecture. This revelation, while aiming for clarity, simultaneously adds another layer of complexity to Intel's graphics roadmap, particularly in light of its unexpected collaboration with Nvidia.
Adding to the ambiguity, Petersen elucidated that the Xe3 designation, established years ago, essentially represents an evolutionary step from Xe2, akin to an 'Xe2 Prime' or 'Xe2 Plus Plus.' The decision to retain the Xe3 branding, despite its evolutionary nature, was reportedly to avoid significant upheaval within the Linux software stack. This explanation attempts to rationalize why the Panther Lake's iGPU, despite being Xe3, is still aligned with the 'B' series branding typically associated with Xe2. Furthermore, Petersen confirmed that the architecture team responsible for Celestial had completed their work, with Xe3P being the initial implementation of their efforts, as seen in the Crescent Island data center GPU. However, Intel is not officially marketing Xe3P as Celestial, effectively discontinuing the Celestial branding.
The strategic alliance between Intel and Nvidia, focusing on integrating Intel CPUs with Nvidia graphics for PCs, further muddies the waters for Intel's proprietary Arc graphics division. While Petersen maintained that Intel will continue developing its own graphics IP for various market segments, the long-term role of Arc graphics, especially for desktop gaming, remains uncertain.
